Personal Visual Identity
I believe it’s important for my personal website’s design to reflect my own identity — from colors to typography. I wanted to further develop my personal visual identity by creating a ‘personal logo,’ and challenged myself to brainstorm and draft a logo within one hour.
Brainstorm. I wanted to base my personal logo on my name, with which I have always strongly identified. I did two brainstorms; one starting with the Mandarin character for my last name, Yang (杨), and the other starting with my English initials (HCY).
My design ideas were centered around nesting letters, as I wanted to visually represent my creative strengths in synthesis and making connections between ideas. One of the ideas I liked most included the mirrored lowercase ‘h’ and ‘y,’ as I felt this mirroring alluded to the palindrome of my first name, ‘Hannah.’ I also liked the idea of creating a ‘sheep’ symbol with my English initials, as the Mandarin word for ‘sheep’ has the same pronunciation as my last name — this felt like a neat way to represent both aspects of my Asian American identity.
